Iranian-affiliated hackers stole personal data of hundreds of thousands of Israelis, including thousands of students, through a flaw in the authentication system of the "Rashim" portal serving Israeli colleges — ID numbers, bank details, psychometric scores, passport photos and even sensitive medical information.
Cyber researcher Lior Ben-David, who investigated and tracked the incident, described it as one of the most severe he has encountered. He had reported the flaw to the Israel National Cyber Directorate back in July 2023 — but many institutions failed to patch their systems, allowing the attackers to exploit it.
